Doctor of Philosophy (Education)

Program Synopsis

The PhD in Education is a research-oriented degree program designed for educators from schools, teacher training colleges, universities, businesses, industry, government agencies, non-governmental organizations, the military and other educational settings who need a strong research base in their careers.

The program is interdisciplinary and it is designed to meet the needs of educators in various positions. Students are presented with knowledge and skills in solving problems and making decisions about research that will advance their development in the profession.

Opportunity is provided for students to focus on an area of study according to his or her interest, previous background and experience.

HMEF5014 : Educational Research Methodology
This course introduces students to research, research problem, research design and data analysis. Students would also learn the intricacies of carrying out academic research in the qualitative and quantitative modes up to the level of writing a research proposal that could help them in carrying out the actual research and data collection. Discussion on the problems that they might experience in the process of carrying out the research and writing out the dissertation would also be included.

HPEF7014 : Advanced Educational Research Methodology
This course addresses how research methods apply to educational research. The course examines the scientific method of understanding behaviour, the recognition and posing of scientifically researchable questions (with emphasis on the relationship between theory and research); the examination of different research designs, considering dynamics, strengths and practical limitations of both the quantitative and qualitative approach. Lastly this course helps students develop cogent research proposals.

HMEF5023 : Theories of Organization and Leadership
The main objective of this course is to expose the students to theories of leadership and organization so that they would be able to understand and value the usefulness of the theories in their capacities as leaders in educational organizations. With this knowledge they would be able to lead others effectively in achieving the vision and mission of their organizations. They will also be exposed to theories in planned change, which are useful in the present post-modern era where changes occur regularly to meet the ever-changing organizational objectives. In order to ensure that change encounters less obstacles, leadership approaches and styles based on strong and appropriate ethics would be the main focus of the course.

HMEF5073 : Foundations Principles and Theory of Curriculum
This course provides the students an in-depth understanding of the major foundations and principles of curriculum. Teachers, educators, school administrators and curriculum designers are often faced with the challenge of conceptualizing, developing, and evaluating curriculum. They need to get clear understanding on the crucial elements related to the philosophical, historical, psychological, and social foundations of curriculum. Throughout this course, students will be exposed to the understanding of the tension between postmodern thinking and modern thinking and how they are impacting curriculum deliberation, development, and implementation.

HMEF5043 : Psychology of Learning & Instruction
This course looks into the two families of learning theory that have significant impact upon teaching if adopted. It begins with the description of the origins of S-R learning, and gestalt-field psychology. The learning processes of both families of learning theory are explained to enable practicing teachers to re-look at their own schoolroom practice, and see if what they are doing have any bearing on the theories. The problem of transfer of learning is also discussed. Finally, the course outlines the important relationships between learning and teaching.

HMEF5083 : Trends and Issues in Educational Technology
This course discusses from the point of views of development, problems and issues that are related to educational technology. The development of the course is related to the history of the involvement of educational technology. Problems and issues that exist are related to the use of teaching materials that are found in schools, the lack of materials, finance, management and current issues regarding the misunderstanding between the concept of educational technology and information technology. These issues in educational technology are related to the application of teaching materials in schools by teachers.

HMEF5033 : Comparative Education
This course provides the students an in-depth understanding of the history, foundation factors and the implementation aspects of educational processes and systems of various countries of the world. Important elements such as diversity of language, ethnicity and culture; leadership models, sociopolitical factors and the roles of various parties in respective educational systems will also be discussed in this course.

HMEF5053 : Measurement and Evaluation in Education
This course introduces students to basic principles of measurement and evaluation. The course also introduces statistical methods to determine item difficulty and discrimination indices and test reliability and validity coefficients. Finally, the course introduces factor analysis and Item Response Theory.

HMEF5063 : Practice and Ethics in Counseling
This course introduces the scope of professional counseling in general, suitable as a preparation for a variety of counseling settings. Appropriate counseling skills in interviewing clients are explained to achieve the desired counseling goals. An overview of three counseling theories are explained to give the readers some ideas of how counselors view maladaptive behaviours. Finally, a chapter on ethics and ethical behaviours is discussed as an important component of counselor training.

HPES7013 : Research in Education Seminar
This course is designed to expose students to explore past and current research in their area of specialization. Under the guidance of research supervisor, each student is required to select at least three (3) past and current research articles in his/her area of specialization. Each student has to make a critical analysis on these articles with respect to the importance of research, research methodology and findings; and its strengths and weaknesses. It is hoped that after analyzing the research articles, students will have some ideas that will help them identify their research area and topic, specifically its theoretical framework.

HPES7023 : Research Proposal Seminar
This course is designed to expose students to the preparation of research proposal. Under the guidance of research supervisor, each student is required to select a research topic in his/her area of specialization. Each student has to prepare and present the research proposal with respect to the research background, problem, questions, theoretical framework, importance and methodology, including research design, sample, instruments and data collection and analysis procedures.

HPES7033 : Research Report Seminar
This course is designed to expose candidates to the preparation of research report. Under the guidance of a supervisor, each candidate is required to write and present his/her research report with respect to data collection procedure, profile of respondents, data analysis procedure for each of the research questions, preliminary findings and brief discussion on the findings.

The completed thesis will be sent to an External Examiner and Internal Examiner to be assessed and followed by a Viva Voce.
